Finchley Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Finchley Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, visitors and the wider public. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with our cleaning activities in homes, offices and commercial premises across our service area.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, and damage to property or the environment arising from our operations. We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice, and we aim to continually improve our standards through regular review and staff engagement.
This policy applies to all employees, contractors and representatives of Finchley Carpet Cleaning while they are carrying out work on behalf of the company, whether at customer premises, in transit or at any other work location.
Management Responsibilities
Company management has overall responsibility for ensuring that effective health and safety arrangements are in place. Management will:
Identify and assess risks associated with carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning tasks, products and equipment. Provide and maintain safe equipment, including extraction machines, vacuums, steam cleaners and hand tools. Select cleaning agents and treatments that are safe when used correctly and suitable for the surfaces being treated. Ensure that appropriate personal protective equipment is provided, maintained and used correctly by staff. Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses and implement measures to prevent recurrence. Regularly review procedures in line with changes in legislation, industry standards and company operations.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All employees must:
Follow company health and safety procedures and safe systems of work at all times. Use equipment, tools and materials only as trained and instructed, and report any defects immediately. Wear the personal protective equipment provided for specific tasks, such as gloves, masks, eye protection or knee pads. Maintain good housekeeping standards, including safe storage of equipment, leads and chemicals to prevent slips, trips and falls. Report accidents, incidents, near misses and any health and safety concerns to management without delay. Cooperate with any health surveillance, training or monitoring required by the company.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before work is carried out, staff are required to assess the potential risks in the work area. This includes considering access routes, stairs, electrical sockets, furnishings, occupants, pets, ventilation and any specific customer concerns. Where risks are identified, appropriate control measures will be put in place, such as using warning signs, adjusting work methods, or temporarily restricting access.
Safe systems of work are provided for routine tasks such as hot water extraction, stain treatment, spot cleaning, rug cleaning and upholstery cleaning. These procedures are reviewed periodically and updated when new equipment, chemicals or techniques are introduced.
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
Finchley Carpet Cleaning follows robust procedures in relation to cleaning chemicals and other substances. All products are assessed to ensure they are suitable for professional use and are used in line with manufacturer instructions and safety data.
Where necessary, diluted solutions are prepared carefully and clearly labelled. Staff are trained in safe handling, storage, application and disposal, and in the action to take if accidental exposure or spillage occurs. Wherever practical, we select low hazard or environmentally responsible products, while maintaining effective cleaning performance.
Equipment Safety and Maintenance
All cleaning machines, tools and accessories used by Finchley Carpet Cleaning are maintained in safe working order. Portable electrical equipment is subject to regular visual checks and formal inspection as required. Damaged leads, plugs or casings must be reported immediately and the equipment removed from service until it is repaired or replaced.
Cables will be routed to minimise trip hazards, and warning signs will be used where appropriate. Staff are trained to operate machinery correctly, including the safe filling, emptying and transportation of water, and to use lifting techniques that avoid strain and injury.
Customer and Public Safety
We take care to carry out cleaning work in a way that minimises inconvenience and risk to customers, visitors and the public. This includes:
Advising customers about drying times, restricted access areas and any residual slip risks on recently cleaned carpets or hard floors. Using clear signage where there is increased risk, such as wet or treated surfaces, trailing leads or hoses. Positioning equipment in a way that keeps thoroughfares and exits as clear as reasonably possible. Supervising work areas and not leaving machines running unattended in unsafe circumstances.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive appropriate induction and on-the-job training that covers health and safety requirements relevant to their role. This includes the safe use of cleaning chemicals, manual handling, use of personal protective equipment, correct application of cleaning methods and emergency procedures.
Refresher training is provided where necessary, and additional training is arranged when new equipment, products or processes are introduced. Supervisors monitor compliance with procedures and provide guidance and support to ensure safe working standards are maintained.
Emergency Procedures and First Aid
Finchley Carpet Cleaning maintains arrangements for dealing with emergencies such as fire, chemical spills, accidental damage, personal injury or sudden illness. Employees are instructed in basic emergency response, including how to raise the alarm, evacuate premises when required, isolate electrical equipment and seek appropriate medical assistance.
Spill management procedures are in place for cleaning products, including containment, clean-up and disposal. Where specific customer premises have their own emergency arrangements, our staff will cooperate and follow local procedures as directed.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective, up to date and appropriate to the size and nature of Finchley Carpet Cleaning. Feedback from employees and customers, together with findings from inspections, audits and incident investigations, is used to improve our systems and working practices.
By working together and maintaining a strong safety culture, Finchley Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our operations.
